Telephoto Lenses
The 70-200mm f/2.8 lens is the professional standard long lens when it comes to action shots, primarily because it allows you to capture a better quality close-up shot (which can really up the visual impact of a photo). The focal length range of 70-200mm makes it pretty versatile, with regards to reach, and the wider aperture of f/2.8 makes it usable even for indoor sports. (If you're not familiar with aperture, we've included a Youtube video in the video section below). There are different versions for different camera models (even within the same brand), so be sure to check for compatibility before purchasing!
Nikon AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8E FL ED VR - amzn.to/3xFpbRW Nikon Z 70-200mm f/2.8 S (for mirrorless) - amzn.to/3UcddXw Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS III USM - amzn.to/44bUW1g Canon RF 70-200mm f/ 2.8 L IS USM (for mirrorless) - amzn.to/4aTYIOR
Super Telephoto Lenses
Interested in even more reach?! Then you might be looking for a super telephoto lens. This is not just a hobby lens... Everything about these guys is big; the reach (focal lengths extend to 400mm or more), the weight (usually metal construction) and the price tag (comparable to the price of a mid-range camera body, at least)! Aperture range can make a big difference with these, so pay close attention to this when shopping around.
Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1 L IS USM (for mirrorless) - amzn.to/3Q1vPbu Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM (for DSLR) - amzn.to/3PY0G96 Nikon AF-S FX Nikkor 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6 G ED - amzn.to/3xTULeK
Monopods
This is a little bit of a tangent, but worth the 30 second read. Monopods are excellent for long photo sessions using heavy lenses! They help provide stabilization similar to a tripod, but with a smaller footprint. It is not advised to leave heavier camera setups unattended, though (they'll still require some hand-holding). The Neewer below is the cost effective option, while the more expensive Manfrotto is a sturdier build and should last you longer.

Here's a quick demonstration we recently posted showing the focal length differences (from the same distance).
