Session 2 - Cell Phone Videography
Our photography class met on Monday (March 11th) at noon. The conversation immediately turned toward cell phone videos, so Brittany, Kristi, Antonio and I keyed in on equipment and ideas for recording short form videos (think social media reels, etc.). Everyone walked away with one or two things they could explore or practice on their own until next week! More details below...

Here's an old video on cell phone equipment ideas I did back during the pandemic (recorded in the middle of the night across the hall from two sleeping kids... that's why the volume may seem low... and I might look a little tired!). It's old, so the products may need to be updated, but it's a good beginning point. I'm sure we'll be covering this a lot more in classes to come.

Here's a quick rundown of specific equipment that was discussed/recommended during class. Each item has a link and a quick description. Cell Phone Gimbals Zhiyun Smooth 5 Combo - amzn.to/3IzHdY3 Zhiyun Smooth 5S Combo - amzn.to/3vaoqzw The Smooth 5 is my go-to cell phone gimbal for larger, heavier cell phones. The 5S model has a light built into the frame. Cell Phone Lenses Moment 58mm Telephoto Lens - amzn.to/48RffSb For those using phones with a single lens (most older models only have a wide angle), adding an additional lens is a good option to get higher quality video at a larger focal length (zoom). Some research is recommended to ensure compatibility, though. Monopods Neewer Monopod with Feet - https://amzn.to/4a3f3jS Manfrotto Monopod with Feet - https://amzn.to/49HDbJ2 These two monopods are great for both videos and long photo sessions using heavy lenses! They help provide stabilization similar to a tripod, but with a smaller footprint. It is not advised to leave heavier camera setups unattended, though (they'll still require some hand-holding). The Neewer is the cost effective option, while the more expensive Manfrotto is a sturdier build and should last you longer. Cameras Canon EOS R50 Content Creator Kit ($799*) - https://amzn.to/3wUokMK - If you're looking for a small camera with good photo and video quality, this could be a winner! The R50 is a light-weight mirrorless camera with a quick autofocus. A hotshoe mic, tabletop tripod and remote are included in the creator kit. You can find just the camera with 18-45mm lens here (https://amzn.to/3IvWXeA) *The kit retails for $999, but it's 20% off at the time of this post.
